Concordia, McGill to clash in men's hockey playoffs

If you enjoyed the thrilling action of last week’s Corey Cup men’s hockey game between the Concordia Stingers and the McGill Redmen, then you’re going to love the draw for OUA playoffs that begin this week.

The Stingers will meet the Redmen in a best-of-three quarterfinal series. McGill finished in first place in the OUA East conference and will host games one and three, Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. (if necessary).

Concordia will host Game 2 at the Ed Meagher Arena at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.“The teams are fairly evenly matched,” said Stingers head coach Kevin Figsby.

“We’ve played close games this year. It’s a great rivalry and I expect typical Concordia-McGill hockey. It will be fast-paced, end-to-end action.”

The Stingers won a preseason contest versus the Redmen in September. It was a 5-4 overtime victory. On Nov. 27, McGill won a regular season game 5-3 and then won 4-3 in double overtime last Friday.

Here’s a few interesting facts on the series from the McGill sports information office:

• Game 1 of the playoffs will be the 200th lifetime meeting between McGill and Concordia. The Stingers have a win-loss-tie record of 94-91-14 against the Redmen in a rivalry that dates back to 1975.

• The teams have crossed paths 11 times in post-season play with McGill winning seven of the series.

• The Redmen have taken the last two playoff meetings (2007 and 2014). Last February McGill won the series in two straight games by scores of 8-4 and 3-1.

• The last time Concordia beat McGill in the post-season was 2001.
