Stingers to host men's rugby Sevens tournament

The Concordia Stingers are pleased to announce they will host Quebec’s first indoor men’s rugby Sevens tournament this Sunday at the Stinger Dome.

Eight teams will participate – all five RSEQ teams from the fall 15s league, plus ETS, Université du Québec à Rimouski and Royal Military College.

The action starts at 11 a.m. Each school will be in a pool of four teams and play a round robin. The top team in each pool will meet in the final at 5 p.m.

“It’s a much faster and higher scoring version of the regular 15-a-side version of the game which makes it enormously spectator friendly,” said Concordia head coach Clive Gibson.

Stingers players to keep an eye on this weekend include Lucas Hotton, a six-foot-two, 195-pound standout from the 2014 championship season, and newcomer Charles Debove who was a member of the Canadian U20 team in 2013 and 2014.

Gibson hopes the tournament is a first step towards developing an indoor Sevens league at the Quebec university level. With the Sevens game being embraced at the international level and introduced at the 2016 Summer Olympics, there is a need to develop good quality Sevens competition at the regional level.
