Coach Popovic signs his first basketball recruit

Head coach Rastko Popovic is pleased to announce forward Jean-Daniel Mathieu from Vanier College has committed to the Concordia Stingers men’s basketball program.

Popovic is thrilled to have his first CIS Letter of Intent signed and feels the addition of a quality student-athlete like Mathieu bodes well for the future.

“I am tremendously excited to welcome Jean-Daniel to our Stingers basketball family,” he said. “He can play both the small and power forward positions. Most importantly he is a great three-point shooter which addresses one of our weaknesses from last year. I look for Jean-Daniel to compete for minutes and contribute right away.”

A co-captain on the Vanier Cheetahs last season, Mathieu averaged 11.4 points and 5.1 rebounds a game. The six-foot-five native of Joliette, Que. played 30 minutes a game.

“I have decided to join the Concordia basketball team because it represents the perfect opportunity to continue to play basketball at a high level as well as pursuing a university education,” Mathieu said. “I have a lot of trust in the new coaching staff and I’m looking forward to being a part of the Concordia program.”

Mathieu, who will study Industrial Engineering at Concordia, received Academic Merit awards from the RSEQ in 2014 and 2015.

Popovic will announce more signings and his coaching staff in the coming weeks.
