Stinger Alex Tessier to play in Rugby Super Series

Concordia Stinger Alex Tessier has been named to the Rugby Canada women’s national team for this summer’s Super Series versus New Zealand, England and the U.S.

Head coach François Ratier announced the 27-player team today. He opted for a combination of youth and experience. He has 13 players returning from Canada’s 2014 Women’s World Cup team, including former Stinger Latoya Blackwood.

With an eye on the 2017 World Cup in Ireland, Ratier is looking to develop some of Canada’s top young players. Tessier, who played two seasons at centre with the Stingers, is the perfect example. In 2014-15 the 21-year-old from Ste. Clotilde de Horton, Que., was the RSEQ MVP, a CIS all-Canadian and Concordia’s Female Athlete of the Year.

The Super Series will take place in Alberta, beginning at the end of the month. Canada will play New Zealand on June 27, the U.S. on July 1 and England on July 5.

All four teams are currently ranked in the top six in the world.
