Popovic, Stingers open RSEQ season Saturday

A new chapter begins for the Concordia men’s basketball program Saturday when the Stingers open the RSEQ season under the direction of first-year head coach Rastko Popovic.

The team will host the UQAM Citadins at 8 p.m. at the Concordia gym in N.D.G.

Leading Popovic’s Stingers will be forward Ken Beaulieu, who was a second team all-star in 2014-15, veteran forward Michael Fosu and point guard Ricardo Monge. They will be joined by a couple of very gifted athletes in RSEQ Cégep all-stars Schneiders Suffrard and TJ Umar. Jaleel Webb, a talented guard who transferred from Bishop’s University, will also turn some heads.

“It’s a new era of Concordia basketball with some exciting players in Ken, Schneiders and TJ,” Popovic said. “They are the future of our program. Athletically they are ready to excel in CIS basketball, we’ll see how quickly they can learn to play at this level and learn to play together. It’s going to be fun to watch these guys this year.”

In preseason action, the Stingers posted a 7-3 win-loss record. They defeated a couple of top teams, including the Windsor Lancers, and won the Saskatchewan tournament and their own Concordia Classic tournament.

Popovic hopes to improve on the Stingers' 2014-15 conference record of eight wins and eight losses and a fourth-place finish.
