CFL sets up eastern combine at Concordia tomorrow

Concordia University is the site of the CFL’s eastern regional combine where 45 of the top university football players will try to impress the professional scouts and general managers.

Tomorrow starting at 8:30 a.m., the athletes will do a circuit of tests and measurements that includes the following: vertical leap, bench press, broad jump, 40-yard dash, short shuttle and three-cone drill.

In the afternoon positional and one-on-one drills will take place.

At approximately 3:20 p.m., Ryan Janzen, the CFL director of football operations, will announce which players from the group have been selected to attend the 2016 National CFL Combine presented by adidas in Toronto this weekend.

Last year, 11 players from three regional combines were extended invitations to the national combine. Seven of those players were selected in the 2015 CFL Draft.

Three members of the Concordia Stingers will participate in tomorrow’s combine – linebacker Arto Khatchikian, cornerback Rashawn Perry and inside receiver Daniel Skube. In addition Stinger defensive lineman Jean-Pierre Munroe will suit up for the one-on-one drills. He’ll lend a hand since there’s a shortage at that position at the camp.

The Stingers football coaching and athletic therapy staffs will be involved as well. They will assist with the drills and tests.

In 2013, Stinger defensive back/returner Kris Robertson wowed the scouts at an eastern regional combine. He was invited to take part in the national event and was drafted by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the second round.

In 2014, Concordia linebacker Travis Bent was selected from the regional camp to go to the national combine. He was drafted by Saskatchewan that May.

Regional camps were introduced by the CFL four years ago. This is the third straight year the eastern regional event has been held at Concordia.

Spectators are welcome after 10 a.m. when activities begin in the Stinger Dome, 7200 Sherbrooke St. W. in N.D.G.
