Beaulieu, Suffrard on men's basketball honour roll

Second-year forward Ken Beaulieu was named to the RSEQ’s first all-star team when the conference announced its men’s basketball award winners late today.

Joining him on the honour roll is Schneiders Suffrard who was named to the all-rookie team.

Beaulieu, a native of Longueuil, Que., played 15 games and led the Stingers in scoring, rebounding, steals and minutes. He averaged 14.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.7 steals. He played 31.4 minutes a game. Of course, Beaulieu is known as one of the most exciting players in the RSEQ. He regularly brings crowds to their feet with his spectacular dunks.

“Ken was our best player this year,” said Stinger head coach Rastko Popovic. “He had a very good second half and was the main reason we were able to put together a seven-game win streak after the holidays. He is working hard to become a more complete player. I think he has the potential to be an all-Canadian before he graduates from university.”

Suffrard, a Montrealer who comes out of the Vanier College basketball program, played in all 16 RSEQ games, averaging 10.3 points. He had 13 blocks and played 30.7 minutes a game as a rookie.

“Schneiders had a big impact on our team in his first year,” said Popovic. “He was really good defensively and he’s working on his offensive game. It won’t be long before he’s an all-star in our league.”

The Stingers are also pleased to see Olivier Simon, a forward at Cégep Édouard-Montpetit, has been named a first team all-star at the college level. Simon has committed to Concordia and will join the team for the 2016-17 season.

The Stingers finished the regular season in second place with a 10-6 win-loss record. They meet the UQAM Citadins in semifinal action at the RSEQ Final 4 tournament on Friday at 8 p.m. All games will take place at McGill’s Love Competition Hall, 475 Pine Ave. W., Montreal.
