Henderson wraps up NCAA career, commits to Stingers

Head coach Rastko Popovic is thrilled to announce Montrealer Malcolm Henderson, who was with the California State University, Fullerton, Titans men’s basketball team the last two years, has joined the Concordia Stingers.

“Malcolm comes with valuable experience, maturity and will be a great leader for our young team,” said Popovic. “I look forward to working with him as he joins us in practice this week.”

The six-foot-eight, 255-pound forward/centre left Montreal after the 2011-12 season with the Vanier Cheetahs. He was with the Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzlies in 2012-13 and sat out with an injury the following year.

From there he went to Cal State, Fullerton, where he red-shirted in 2014-15. Last season he played 30 games averaging 15 minutes of playing time, 2.9 points and 3.1 rebounds.

He graduated from Cal State, Fullerton, with a B.Sc. in Kinesiology.

“I’ve been away for awhile,” Henderson said. “I’m excited about the opportunity to come home and play in the city I grew up in.“I chose Concordia because I found it very welcoming. I like the guys on the team and I like the coaches. It’s a hard working unit with no ego. It seems like the right place for me to play.”

Popovic has brought in a lot of young talent for the 2016-17. The addition of Henderson will add another dimension to the Stingers’ game.

“I am extremely excited to add depth to our front court rotation,” said the head coach. “With his size, he will have an immediate impact on both ends on the floor. His post play and offensive rebounding should help us get high percentage shots. His post defence and rebounding will also be a major asset.”

The Stingers wrap up their summer series versus NCAA opponents next week when they host the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans, a top NCAA Division II school, on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 2 at 1 p.m.
