Women's basketball team dominates Classic tournament

With a 62-41 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees, the Concordia Stingers women’s basketball won its sixth consecutive game and claimed the championship at the Concordia Classic basketball tournament on the weekend.

Newcomer Marvia Dean was the MVP of the tournament. While Stinger teammates Caroline Task and Richelle Gregoire were tournament all-stars.

Dean’s performance on the weekend had everyone talking. In a 72-51 victory over the UPEI Panthers last Friday, she had 15 points and an astounding 19 rebounds.The following day in a 68-39 win over the Guelph Gryphons, she collected 19 points and 13 rebounds.

In the final on Sunday, Dean scored 13 points and picked up two rebounds in just 25 minutes of play.

The Stingers opened the university preseason with three decisive victories at the Nipissing Lakers tournament Sept. 30-Oct 2.

Concordia will look for its seventh straight win when the team travels to Toronto to face the Ryerson Rams this Saturday at 1 p.m. The preseason continues with a trip to Ottawa and the three-day Carleton Ravens tournament Oct. 21-23.
