Syragakis, Rimpel – Athletes of the Week

Katerina Syragakis of the women’s rugby team and Jean-Guy Rimpel of the football team have been named the Concordia Stingers athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 30.

Syragakis, a hooker in her fifth year of eligibility, was the outstanding player in Concordia’s 29-19 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the RSEQ championship last Friday. She capped off a strong season with exceptional play in the game. She scored one of Concordia’s three tries. The Stingers are currently in Victoria preparing for the U Sports women’s rugby championship. Syragakis and the Stingers play their first game Thursday night.

A 24-year-old native of Montreal, Syragakis is a Biochemistry student at Concordia.Rimpel, a second-year running back, carried the football 36 times for 234 yards and three touchdowns to help his team defeat the Bishop’s Gaiters 39-6 last Saturday.

His performance was one for the record books. Thirty-six carries in a game is the most by any running back in RSEQ history. It is also the best single game performance by a Concordia running back in the university’s history. His 234 yards beats the school record set by Andrew Hamilton who carried for 221 yards in game versus McGill in 2006.

The 22-year-old athlete from Montreal is working on a Certificate in Arts and Science at Concordia.
