Women's hockey team topples No. 5-ranked Martlets

The Concordia Stingers women’s hockey team scored three unanswered goals in the third period to upset the No. 5-ranked McGill Martlets 3-1 at the Ed Meagher Arena on Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first period, McGill’s Melodie Daoust opened the scoring at 18:15 of the second frame.

The Stingers came back with three goals in the final 17 minutes of the game. Stephanie Lalancette put Concordia on the scoreboard at 3:08 of the third period. Sophie Gagnon scored the game-winning goal at 10:13 and Keriann Schofield notched an empty-netter with 10 seconds left to play.

Goaltender Katherine Purchase stopped 18 of 19 shots to pick up the win.

The Stingers have won three of four games since returning from the holiday break. Two of the wins have come against Top 10 teams. In addition to the McGill victory today, the Stingers defeated the Montreal Carabins 4-3 in overtime on Jan. 13. The Carabins were ranked sixth at the time.

Concordia travels to Ottawa to play the Gee-Gees next Saturday. The Stingers return home to face the Carleton Ravens on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 3 p.m.
