Concordia connections to Women's Rugby World Cup

Several people with links to the Concordia Stingers are currently taking part in the 2017 Women’s Rugby World Cup in Ireland.

Two current Stingers, Alex Tessier and Frédérique Rajotte, are playing on Team Canada. Both were in the lineup for Canada’s 98-0 victory over Hong Kong in the first game of preliminary pool play on Aug. 9. Tessier scored a try in the lopsided win.

Latoya Blackwood is also representing Canada in the prestigious competition. She is a Stinger alumnus who wrapped up her university career with one season at Concordia. She was a member of the 2011 women’s rugby team.

Finally, Team Canada’s head coach François Ratier is also an assistant with the Stingers program.Canada’s next game is versus Wales on Aug. 13. The final game of pool play is against New Zealand on Aug. 17. All the games are taking place in Dublin.

The last Women’s World Cup was help in France in 2014. Canada finished with a silver medal. The Canadians were ranked third heading into the 2017 tournament.
