Stinger forward Anthony Beauregard scored two goals and added four assists to help Concordia take two games from the Queen’s Gaels in regular season men’s hockey action.
Last Oct. 23, the leading scorer in U SPORTS collected a goal and two assists in a 4-3 overtime victory. When the teams met again on Jan. 13, Beauregard picked up another goal and two assists to help the Stingers down the Gaels 4-2.
Can Beauregard and the Stingers repeat the feat now that the teams face off again in the OUA East semifinals? The answer will come quickly as the teams open the best-of-three series Wednesday night in Kingston, Ont.
Game 2 of the series will be held on Concordia’s Loyola campus Friday at 7:30 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, is slated for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. back in Kingston.
Concordia finished in third place in the 10-team OUA East division with an 18-7-3 record for 39 points, while the Gaels wrapped up the season in second place with a 19-6-3 record and 41 points.
The Stingers scored an impressive 111 goals to Queen’s 90 goals. But the Gaels have the edge in goals allowed, giving up just 67 compared to Concordia’s 90.
The teams also met in the second round of the playoffs last year. Queen’s goaltender Kevin Bailie proved to be impenetrable in the series. The Gaels won the series in three games and Bailie only allowed three goals.
This year Bailie played in 13 regular season games and posted a 2.53 goals-against average. Stinger Marc-Antoine Turcotte can go toe-to-toe with Bailie. He started in 26 games and recorded a 2.71 GAA.
