Carl Neill earns U SPORTS all-rookie honours

Concordia Stinger defenceman Carl Neill was named to the U SPORTS men’s hockey all-rookie team announced this evening at the University Cup awards gala in Fredericton, N.B.

Neill played in 28 games scoring five goals and adding 26 assists for 31 points. He was the top scoring defenceman in university men’s hockey. He was a first team OUA East all-star and named to the OUA’s all-rookie team.

“Carl is an offensive-minded player,” said Concordia head coach Marc-André Elément. “He knows the game very well. He has great vision on the ice and he’s a smart decision maker. He also very mobile.

“He’s a really good leader on our team, and that’s impressive for a first-year player.”

The Lachute, Que. native comes to the Concordia Stingers from the QMJHL. He played four seasons with the Charlottetown Islanders and the Sherbrooke Phoenix where he was team captain for two years.

He was selected 144th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2015 NHL draft.

Neill and the Stingers open the national championship with a quarter-final game versus the UNB Varsity Reds on Thursday at 6 p.m. eastern.
