Linebacker Shawn Charles commits to Stinger football

Head coach Brad Collinson is pleased to announce linebacker Shawn Charles has committed to the Concordia Stingers and will join the football team for training camp this August.

The Ottawa native is an exceptional athlete who represented St. Patrick’s Catholic High School and the Ottawa Cumberland Junior Gee-Gees in the Ontario Provincial Football League.

“We are excited to add Shawn to our Stinger family,” said Collinson. “He’s a great addition with a promising future.”

Charles, who checks in at six foot one and 200 pounds, made a strong impression on assistant coach Jermaine Lewis-Parris who was instrumental in recruiting him.

“Shawn is a great football player and a great young man,” Lewis-Parris said. “He’s athletic. He’s fast. He’ll run you down sideline to sideline. He has good football instincts. He’s a very physical player.”

Charles,18, earns respect for his competitiveness and is expected to push people in training camp and be impactful on special teams. The Stingers recruiting philosophy helped convince Charles to pursue his football and academics goals at Concordia.

“After being recruited by many teams, it was always the same thing,” he said. “ ‘Hurry and apply, send your transcript, keep your marks up.’ But with Concordia it was, ‘Take your time to choose where you want to go. It’s a big decision. Don’t rush.’ Then I knew Concordia was different. They wanted me to do what was best for me.”

Charles will begin his studies in the Certificate of Arts and Science program this fall.
