2 Stingers invited to National Rugby Camp

Two members of the Concordia Stingers men’s rugby program are taking part in Rugby Canada’s Sevens Camp at Shawnigan Lake School in British Columbia this week.

Caleb Jordan and Frederic Kacou are among more than 30 national and development level players invited to the camp by Geraint John, head coach of the National Senior Sevens Men’s Program at Rugby Canada.

It is a selection camp for the upcoming International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens World Series which starts in October in Australia.

It is also an evaluation camp for the Maple Leafs, a development team run by Rugby Canada. The Maple Leafs will enter the North America Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Sevens in November and the Las Vegas Sevens in January 2014.

There are two days of training before the athletes will be split into two squads that will compete in the Victoria Sevens Tournament on Saturday.

“I’m obviously happy to be invited,” said Jordan a second-year winger who represented Canada in Sevens at the Summer Universiade in July. “There will be a lot of experienced players there. I expect the level of play to be fast. Also, I’m looking forward to working with some good coaches.”

“I’m looking forward to going to Victoria to learn new things,” adds Kacou, a third-year winger with the Stingers. “I’m excited about seeing the game at another level. Hopefully I’ll be able to show the national coaches some good things.”

Jordan and Kacou return to Montreal on Sunday and will be with Concordia head coach Clive Gibson and their Stinger teammates as they prepare for the first game of the Quebec university season at home to the Sherbrooke Vert & Or on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m.
