Women's soccer memorial game to help hospital patients

The members of the Concordia women’s soccer team will pay tribute to an inspirational former Stinger this Friday at 8:30 p.m. when they host the Laval Rouge et Or in the eighth annual Erica Cadieux Spadafora memorial game at Concordia Stadium.

The event honours Cadieux, a young mother and lawyer who died tragically at 34 years of age when she was struck by a car in January of 2006 in Beaconsfield, Que.

Cadieux was a devoted mid-fielder/defender with the Stingers women's soccer team in 1992-94.

Out of respect for Cadieux and her family, the Stingers will collect small gifts for the patients of the Montreal Children’s Hospital. The Child Life Services department would appreciate donations of markers, coloring books, stickers, bubbles, Play-Doh, DVD movies, infants toys, deck of cards and earphones for music.

At the beginning of the game, Erica’s family members come to centre field to greet the teams and collect the gifts. Afterwards, they present a plaque to the captains of the winning team. Erica's widower, Carlo Spadafora, and her children, Bianca, 9, and Olivia, 8, will make a special trip to Montreal from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., where they now live.

In 2012, the Stingers and the McGill Martlets played to a 2-2 in the Cadieux memorial game.
