3rd quarter collapse ends Stingers' playoff run

It was a tight battle in the early-going of the RSEQ women’s basketball semifinal, but a difficult third period for the Concordia Stingers paved the way for a 59-48 UQAM Citadins victory in Quebec City Friday night.

"For the most part, it was a good game for us,” said Stinger head coach Keith Pruden. “We did a lot of good things in the first half. But they came out and played very aggressive defence in the third quarter, and we just couldn’t put the ball in the basket."

The Stingers had a good start, challenging the Citadins’ offence with strong defensive play. Concordia led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter. The tight battle continued, but at halftime UQAM had a slim 26-24 lead.

The game was decided in the third quarter when the Citadins outscored the Stingers 18-2, including 16 unanswered points off the start.

With their season at stake, Concordia fought back in the fourth frame, scoring nine straight points to start. It was too little too late though, and UQAM held on to its lead and the victory.

With 19 points veteran guard Kaylah Barret led the scoring for the Stingers. Second-year forward Marilyse Roy-Viau chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds.
