Gaiters dash Stingers basketball playoff hopes

For the second straight year, the Bishop’s Gaiters defeated the Concordia Stingers in the RSEQ men’s basketball semifinals. This time it was a 74-59 victory for the Gaiters at the Final 4 championship hosted by Université Laval on Saturday.

“We didn’t execute the way we had to execute,” said Concordia head coach John Dore. “Bishop’s is a really experienced team, their guys have been playing together for three or four years. They are big with a good depth, so they deserve full credit.”

The game started well for the Stingers when every shot fired seemed to find the basket. The teams were tied 18-18 after the first 10 minutes. Despite exceptional outside shooting from Concordia senior Jean-André Moussignac, the Gaiters held a 36-34 halftime lead.

The Stingers held tight in the third quarter trailing by just three points, but Bishop’s pulled away in the final frame. They dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Stingers 22-10.

“I’m obviously very happy with the win,” said Bishop’s head coach Rod Gilpin. “Our veteran guys really stepped up and we got some really good contribution from our rookies when we needed to. “

Moussignac finished with 25 points for the Stingers and was named game MVP. Zach Brisebois chipped in with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
