Concordia wrestlers win 6 medals at nationals

The Concordia Stingers wrestling team won six medals at the CIS national championship in Fredericton on the weekend, including two golds and a silver from the women’s competitors.

Concordia had three wrestlers competing in the women’s competition and all made it to the finals. The Stingers earned 28 points to finish fifth in the women’s standings. The Brock Badgers had six wrestlers competing and they accumulated 50 points to win the championship.

Linda Morais won the 63 kg weight class. She defeated Larissa D’Alleva from Western University to win the gold medal. It’s the third medal in three years for Morais. She won a bronze as a rookie in 2012 and earned a gold last year. She also took home the R.W. Pugh Fair Play Award for her efforts at the nationals.

Veronica Keefe won a gold medal in the 72 kg category. She beat out Olivia DiBacco from Brock. It is the third medal for Keefe. She was a silver medallist in 2011 and won a bronze in 2012.

Finally, Liz Sera won a silver medal at 55 kg. It was the second medal of her career. The transfer student from Western University won a bronze medal with her former school in 2010.

On the men’s side, Concordia finished in sixth place with 30 points based on the results of six competitors. With 60 points, Brock also won the men’s competition.

Rookie Vince De Marinis won a silver medal at 61 kg. Steven De Layen (65 kg) and Jordan Steen (90 kg) were bronze medallists. Trevor Banks finished fifth overall at 54 kg, rookie Kenneth Kaczkowski also finished in fifth place at 82 kg and Chris Kinsella was seventh at 76 kg.
