Football team accepts the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Head coach Mickey Donovan and the Concordia Stingers football team accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from two alumni who each offered to make donations to the Tony Proudfoot ALS Fund if the team took the plunge.

On Aug. 15, about 125 players and members of the coaching staff lined up at Concordia Stadium after the first on-field practice at training camp and poured icy water over their heads.

In addition to being part of the social media phenomenon that is raising awareness for the ALS Society, it was a chance to remember and honor Tony Proudfoot, a former Stinger coach and friend to many current staff members and football alumni.

"It's so important to give back to people who have been here, been part of the family," said Concordia head coach Mickey Donovan.

Proudfoot, 61, lost his battle with ALS in 2010, a battle he fought with strength, dignity and determination. He not only helped raise funds for the cause with the Tony Proudfoot Fund, he also put the disease at the forefront and raised significant awareness across Canada.

The Stingers’ ice bucket challenge has helped raise in excess of $2500.
