Concordia Stinger quarterback François Dessureault passed for 291 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead his team to a 41-7 victory over the McGill Redmen in the 46th annual Shaughnessy Cup game before 3,131 at Molson Stadium on Friday night.
The win gives head coach Mickey Donovan and the Stingers a perfect 2-0 win-loss record to start the season.
Dessureault and the Stingers jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter. Kicker Keegan Treloar opening the scoring with a 15-yard field goal. Then Dessureault, a third-year pivot, ran five yards to score the first major of the game. Jean-Christophe Benny caught a seven-yard TD reception and the formidable defence forced McGill to concede it first of four safeties in the game.
There was no looking back after that.
Concordia rolled up 19 first downs and 381 yards of offence.Treloar went four for four on fields goals and Daniel Skube caught a 34-yard strike from Dessureault for the only other Stinger major of the game.
Other stats of note: Stinger rookie running back Gunner Tatum was the leading rusher in the game with 49 yards on 14 carries. Slotback Jamal Henry was the top receiver with 96 yards on five receptions.
The defence was exceptional, holding McGill to 235 yards of offence and forcing the four safeties.
Next, the Stingers (2-0) host the Sherbrooke Vert & Or (1-1) at the Homecoming game this Friday at 7 p.m. at Concordia Stadium.
