The Concordia Stingers defence put on one of the most dominant performances in the 40-year history of the university in an overwhelming 63-7 victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Halifax this afternoon.
Overall, Saint Mary’s rolled up just six first downs – one passing and five rushing. The Huskies’ total offensive output was 62 yards and only 18 of those came on the pass.
The SMU passing attack struggled immensely and saw quarterback Ben Rossong throw six interceptions. The Stingers’ defence took three of those back for touchdowns, all in the first quarter.
With six interceptions this afternoon, Concordia now has 13 interceptions in four games which ranks No. 1 in the CIS.
The Stingers defence has scored four TDs which is also tops in the nation.
Fifth-year halfback Kris Robertson leads the CIS with four interceptions that he has returned for a total of 150 yards and two majors. He took one back 38 yards for a score just seven minutes into the game.
The Concordia offence also excelled. The Stingers had 28 first downs and 457 yards of offence.Third-year quarterback François Dessureault completed 19 of 25 passes for 221 yards and two touchdown passes. He added another TD on a one-yard keeper in the third quarter.
Rookie pivot Colin Sequeira replaced Dessureault late in the third quarter. He completed all seven of his pass attempts for 100 yards and a TD.
Fourth-year slotback Jamal Henry had seven catches for 103 yards and a touchdown, while fourth-year kicker Keegan Treloar connected for seven converts, three field goals and a single for 17 points.
The No. 9-ranked Stingers (4-0) travel to Quebec City next Sunday to take on the No. 1-ranked Laval Rouge et Or.
