Gaw, Stingers ready for Quebec women's rugby final

The Concordia Stingers women’s rugby team will make its eighth consecutive appearance in the RSEQ championship game this Saturday against the Ottawa Gee-Gees on the road.

The Concordia women’s rugby team has been a force to reckon with this year. The Stingers finished off the season in third place in the Quebec conference standings with a 5-2 win-loss record. They will play the first-place Ottawa Gee-Gees who have yet to lose a game this season.

The captain of the Stingers, fifth-year flanker Hughanna Gaw, believes that as long as the team implements its game plan and plays as a unit, Concordia can beat Ottawa.

According to Gaw, the Stingers have a few surprises for their opposition and expect a different outcome from the only matchup between the teams on Sept. 28 that saw Ottawa win 30-7.

“I don’t think we were prepared to face this year’s Ottawa team a month ago. They caught us off guard and then exploited our frantic play,” said Gaw.

This week the team has been training hard and has focused on understanding how Ottawa plays, figuring out the patterns, strengths and weaknesses. Gaw says going into this weekend the Stingers know what to expect and that their team has the skill, knowledge and heart needed to win.

In the last seven years that Concordia appeared in the RSEQ championship, the Stingers won four titles, the last time being in 2012.

This year’s final will take place Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in Ottawa at Matt Anthony Field.
