Alex Tessier tops women's rugby honour roll

Alexandra Tessier, a second-year centre with the Concordia Stingers, has been named the most valuable player in the RSEQ women’s rugby conference.

She was third in scoring in the Quebec league with five tries, 18 converts and three penalty goals for 70 points. She was named the game MVP in three of seven regular season contests this fall.

The award is another exceptional accomplishment for Tessier who won a gold medal with Team Canada’s at the 2014 International University Sports Federation Women's Rugby Sevens Championship in Sao Jose de Campos, Brazil on Aug. 10. She also represented Canada in international U20 events over the summer.

Tessier is also on the 2014 all-star team. A year ago, she was the RSEQ Rookie of the Year.

A 21-year-old native of Sainte Clotilde de Horton, Que., Tessier studies in the Math and Stats program at Concordia.

Hughanna Gaw, a veteran No. 8 player, wraps up her university career with a fifth all-star award. This season she scored eight tries in five games and was named MVP on two occasions.

The native of Elgin, Que. is a Leisure Sciences student.

The Stingers finished in third-place with a 5-2 win-loss record this season. They upset the second-place Laval Rouge et Or 30-19 in semifinals. Concordia made its eighth consecutive appearance in the Quebec championship game on Oct. 25, but lost a hard-fought battle 13-5 to the first-place, undefeated Ottawa Gee-Gees.
