Bye-bye monkey! Women's hockey team breaks streak

The Concordia Stingers women’s hockey team defeated the No. 1-ranked McGill Martlets 1-0 this afternoon putting an end to a 57-game losing streak.

The Martlets had dominated the Stingers for almost nine years. The last Concordia victory was on Feb. 5, 2006 when the Stingers won 2-1.

“It was just a really good team effort,” said Stinger head coach Les Lawton. “I think we stuck to our game plan, we did a really good job shutting down their big three players and we were very composed.”

The game was played at McGill, and upon his return to the Loyola campus Lawton joked about the breaking the streak.

“Anybody seen a monkey running around,” he asked, “the one that’s been on my back for the last eight years.”

The lone goal in the game was scored on the power play by Audrey Morand at 5:36 of the first period.

Goaltender Briar Bache recorded the shutout, turning away 27 shots.
