Stingers looking to break rugby championship jinx

For the fifth consecutive year, the Concordia Stingers men’s rugby team will meet the McGill Redmen in the RSEQ championship game, but this time the team is looking for a different outcome.

The Redmen have won four consecutive titles, including last year when they squeaked by Concordia 16-6 on a cold, wet Friday night.

This season McGill had the advantage in regular season play, winning 20-17 on Sept. 10 and there was a 17-17 tie on Oct. 10.

However, Concordia finished in first place in the Quebec conference with a 5-2-1 win-loss-tie record. The Redmen were third with a 4-2-2 record.

The Stingers will rely on the kicking of 2013 RSEQ MVP Joey Fulginiti who finished in a first-place tie in scoring with 57 points. Captain Yannick Fortin will be a key player to watch since he provides leadership, plays inspired defence and can create opportunities on offence.

Also, keep and eye on veterans Fred Kacou on the wing and fullback Caleb Jordan. Each of them has scored five tries in eight regular season games.

The championship will be played Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Concordia Stadium. Admission is $5.
