Stingers honour Kelly-Anne Drummond at rugby opener

The Concordia Stingers women's rugby team will host one of the most popular events on the fall schedule - the 19th annual Kelly-Anne Drummond Cup - Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Concordia Stadium.

The game pays tribute to Drummond, a former Stinger rugby player who died tragically on Oct. 3, 2004.

The Stingers are excited to play their home-opener versus the McGill Martlets in front of friends, fans and Kelly-Anne’s family, including her mother Doreen Haddad who has been a devoted champion of the Stingers women’s rugby program for more than 20 years. She is so dedicated that she set up a scholarship to support a women’s rugby player.

“I believe that this is what Kelly-Anne would want me to do to honour her legacy in an environment she loved and respected,” Haddad wrote on the web page supporting the scholarship. “Kelly-Anne cared and supported her teammates. She was a guiding light with an infectious smile.

“My message is personal. I believe that every woman can have the opportunity to obtain the education she wants without barriers.”

Donations in support of the scholarship are encouraged.  DONATE

Drummond left behind many relatives, friends and teammates from her playing days at Concordia and with the Montreal Barbarians Rugby Club.

At the game, everyone gathers to celebrate Kelly-Anne’s spirit and love of rugby. She was a member of the Concordia women's rugby team from 1999 through 2001. A front row player, she was respected by her teammates for her commitment to the game and her work ethic. She also charmed her many friends with her inquisitiveness and fun-loving approach to life. She graduated from Concordia University with a major in Communications in 2002.
