Con U women win 7s tournament

The Concordia Stingers women's rugby team won the collegiate division of the 48th annual New York 7s tournament played last Saturday on Randall’s Island.

The prestigious tournament hosted by the New York Rugby Club featured 92 teams in seven divisions, making it the largest 7s tournament in the United States. It has been held on the Saturday following U.S. Thanksgiving since 1959 and traditionally marks the end of the fall rugby season in the New York Metropolitan area.

The Stingers won their four pool matches beating the Worcester Teapots 31-12, Southern Connecticut State 47-0, University of New Hampshire 21-7 and the Empire State Collegiate All-Stars 29-0.

In the final Concordia defeated the TMR U23 women 24-5. Tries were scored by tournament MVP Virginia Klinkhoff (with two) and Ali Olshefski.

"I’m ecstatic with the result and I couldn’t be happier for all the players who came down," said Concordia head coach Graeme McGravie. "The last month of training paid off for us with assistant coach Sommer Christie leading the 7s sessions. Our athletes were true ambassadors both on and off the field for the university and our program."

As a result of winning the division, the Stingers were rewarded with a tournament rugby ball, a DVD of the final game and automatic paid entry into the 2007 tournament.
