Women lead cage sweep

The Stingers women's basketball team defeated the McGill Martlets 69-60 to lead a Concordia sweep at a basketball doubleheader with their cross-town rivals at Concordia gym on Saturday night.

The men's team beat the McGill Redmen 67-59 in the opening game. Third-year forward Dwayne Buckley led the charge with 28 points and seven rebounds.

The Concordia women's team played one of their best halves so far this season. Led by veteran forward Melanie Larocque's aggressive play, the Stingers rolled up a 38-25 halftime lead. Larocque scored nine points in the first half and finished the game with 17.

Rookie guard Krystle Douglas had 13 points, while another first-year player Cshandrika Hutson contributed 11 points.

Hutson was also strong defensively, helping hold off a late charge by the Martlets.

The Stingers improved their win-loss record to 2-5. Concordia, McGill and UQAM all have two wins in the Quebec conference.

The next two games are key for the Stingers who play at UQAM this Friday night and return home to host McGill again on Friday, Jan. 19.
