Victor Zilberman, Concordia University's long-time wrestling mentor, was named the outstanding Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) men's wrestling coach at the national championships award dinner hosted by Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont., last Saturday.
Zilberman's Concordia wrestlers won six medals, including four gold medals. The strong individual performances helped the team finish second overall at the championship. Concordia collected 56 points, second only to Brock with 59 points.
Under his tutelage, Concordia has won 87 medals and six team titles at the CIAU/CIS wrestling championships. In addition five Concordia athletes have been named the outstanding wrestler at the CIS/CIAUs.
Previously, Zilberman has been named CIAU Coach of the Year on two occasions - in 1986 and in 1984.
Outside of Concordia, Zilberman also has impressive credentials. He was a member of the Canadian coaching staff at several Olympic Games, and he continues to coach Canadian athletes at world championships as well as at the national and provincial levels.
