Heading into the nationals, he'd won five university events and finished second at the Guelph University meet. The Pure and Applied Math major is a three-time CIS Academic all-Canadian. He was also named one of eight top academic athletes by the CIS last fall. He was the highest achieving male student-athlete out of Quebec.
Zilberman, a heavyweight, won his third straight medal at the Canadian championship. He won a silver medal in 2005 and a gold medal in 2004. This year, he finished first at four university competitions and he has one second-place finish. He also represented Canada at two international events this season, including a first-place finish at the Sombo World Cup in Nice, France last November. The four-time juvenile and junior national champion hopes to represent Canada at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. He finished second in qualifying for the 2004 Athens Games.
