Wrestler Hana Askren and linebacker Patrick Donovan were named the Concordia Athletes of the Year at a gala awards dinner attended by 400 people on Wednesday evening.
Askren may have been new to the Concordia Department of Recreation and Athletics but she quickly made a name for herself. Competing in the 48-kilo weight class, she won a gold medal at the CIS national wrestling championships in Saskatoon in March. She dominated her three preliminary matches and the gold medal event. She was also named the outstanding female wrestler at the championship. Now her focus is on qualifying for the Olympic Games next year in Beijing, China. She recently became a citizen of Israel and hopes to represent her new country. With a BA in Italian Studies and an MA in Arabic Literature, she came to Concordia last September. She is studying for a Ph.D. in Humanities.
Donovan returned to the Concordia Stingers in 2006 with a mission. He wanted to be better than he was in his 2005 President's Trophy winning season. He wanted to best every play, every bench press and every film analysis. Patrick met or surpassed every goal he set this season. Once again he was named the outstanding defensive player in the country, he was a first team all-Canadian, a Quebec all-star and the most valuable player on the Stingers.
This week, he reached a new level. Patrick was named the outstanding male athlete in Quebec university sport and will represent Concordia and Quebec at the BLG Awards in Calgary on April 29 and 30. The event will be broadcast on TSN in May. He is one of four finalists for outstanding male athlete in Canada.Patrick finishes his career at Concordia as one of the most accomplished male athletes in the 32-year history of the Stingers.
