Pandas take Concordia-Reebok cage title

Tournament MVP Michelle Smith scored 14 points to help lead the Alberta Pandas to a 74-66 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in the championship game of the three-day, eight-team Concordia-Reebok Women's University Basketball Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Concordia gym in Montreal.

Alberta had four players in double figures: Smith and Kristin Jarock, Kara Stevens and tournament all-star Maya Tecza who scored 12 points apiece. Guelph countered with strong performances from Sharon Hollinshead with 15 points and Sarah Teeter with 12 points.

The championship game was tied at 34 at halftime.

In the third-place game Canada's No. 1-ranked team, the Simon Fraser Clan, defeated the Carleton Ravens 62-49. Tournament all-star Lani Gibbons led the charge with 13 points and six rebounds. Courtney Gerwing also added 13 points and five rebounds for the Clan. The leading scorer in the game came from the Ravens as tournament all-star Dasa Farthing chipped in with 15 points. Carleton's Brooke Ritchie also came up big with 10 points and 11 rebounds. In the consolation final, the Concordia Stingers continued to play well and surprise teams, this time upsetting conference rivals the UQAM Citadins 47-40. All-star Emilie Ruel had another strong outing, leading all scorers in the game with 16 points and nine rebounds.

In the seventh-place game, the Memorial Sea-Hawks, who are ranked ninth in the CIS, defeated the eighth-ranked Bishop's Gaiters. The final score was 60-58. Memorial's Leslie Stewart was the top scorer in the game with 14 points.
