Larissa Andrusyshyn scored a pair of tries to lead the Quebec champion Concordia Stingers to a 17-5 win over the OUA finalist Waterloo Warriors in the fifth-place game of the 2007 CIS women’s rugby championship yesterday in London, Ont.
The victory gave Concordia fifth place in the six-team championship tournament.
The Stingers came out in full force at the beginning of the game, scoring their first try only five minutes into the match when Andrusyshyn found the open pocket and broke through the Warriors’ back line.
Caught off guard by the dominating Concordia team, Waterloo turned over the ball countless times in their own half and were seemingly unable to match the Stingers’ tough play.
Pushing for try again and missing the try-line by inches, the Stingers were awarded a five-yard scrum. Concordia overpowered the Warriors in the scrum allowing Andrusyshyn to pick up the loose ball and drive it over the try-line for her second try of the game.
Another try from Vanessa Ng padded the Stingers’ lead, which was clinched by Jennifer Robinson's conversion.
The Stingers played a preseason game with the highly-respected Warriors on Aug. 31 and lost 15-0.
A nationals all-star team was named at the end of the tournament, and Stingers Robin Hemming and Cathy Nichols were among the honorees.
