Stingers tournament a fundraiser for breast cancer

The Concordia Stingers women’s basketball team is pleased to announce it will donate a portion of the proceeds from its 2007 Concordia-Reebok tournament to the Breast Cancer Society of Canada.

The CIS Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) membership, at the urging of Bishop’s Gaiters head coach Rod Gilpin, decided to band together to help fight the battle against breast cancer. To date more than 30 CIS women's basketball programs have jumped on board and are raising money at regular season games, tournaments or through other special projects.

Donations from fans and part of the ticket revenue from the Stingers’ six-team tournament Dec. 28-30 will go to the initiative.

The WBCA plans to announce the grand total of all money raised at the CIS championship in Saskatoon in March.

“This is a great initiative coming out of the WBCA, and we are excited to be a part of it,” said Concordia head coach Keith Pruden. “It’s a disease that can affect all of us, and our team is looking forward to doing its part.”

The tournament will be an Ontario-Quebec showcase with a good cross-section of universities competing.

The Queen’s Golden Gaels, Brock Badgers and Windsor Lancers will travel east to Montreal. Windsor has two Montrealers involved with its program – head coach Chantal Vallée and second-year guard Dranadia Roc who is averaging 12.9 points a game this season.

Joining the Stingers from the Quebec conference are the Bishop’s Gaiters and the UQAM Citadins.
