The Concordia Stingers women’s soccer and the men’s rugby teams will see playoff action versus their cross-town rivals at McGill University this weekend.
The women’s soccer team will meet the Martlets in a Quebec semifinal game at Molson Stadium on Friday at 7 p.m. With an 11-1-2 win-loss-tied record McGill finished in first place in the Quebec conference. Concordia wrapped up the regular season in fourth place with an 8-5-1 record.
The teams met twice this season with the Martlets winning both contests. McGill posted a 2-1 victory on Sept. 18 and a 1-0 win on Oct. 14. The last time the Stingers defeated the Martlets was on Friday, Nov. 1, 2002 in a semifinal game at Molson Stadium. Concordia prevailed 1-0 in a shootout.
The winner of the contest will meet the winner of the Montreal Carabins-Laval Rouge et Or semifinal in the Quebec championship on Sunday.
The Concordia men’s rugby team up set the second-place Bishop’s Gaiters 20-7 in the Quebec conference semifinals last Sunday in Lennoxville, Que. The third-place Stingers advance to the league championship versus the Redmen at McGill’s Molson Stadium on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
The Stingers posted a 3-4-1 record in the regular season, while the Redmen boast a 7-1 record. McGill’s only loss was to Concordia by a score of 27-20 on Oct. 5. The teams also met on Oct. 19 when the Redmen recorded a 9-6 victory.
The last time the Stingers won the Quebec championship was in 2001 with an 11-10 victory over the Redmen. Concordia’s last appearance in the final was 2002 when the team was edged out 14-10 by McGill.
