The Concordia Stingers women’s rugby team defeated the McGill Martlets 13-5 in Quebec university semifinal action Sunday to advance to the provincial championship this weekend.
Jennifer Rosenbaum and Vanessa Grillo scored tries for Concordia. Rookie sensation Jackie Titlley connected on a penalty goal. Amanda Henderson scored the lone try for the second-place Martlets.
Concordia posted a 4-2 win-loss record and finished in third place in the regular season.
The Stingers, who are the defending QSSF champions, will meet the first-place, undefeated Laval Rouge et Or on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Ste. Foy, Que.
“Our mood is good right now,” said Concordia head coach Graeme McGravie. “We’re very optimistic and focused. We have a sense of belief in ourselves and a sense of purpose.”
In the only meeting between the teams this season, the Rouge et Or won 37-23. But the Stingers had a strong second half and feel they can build on that momentum.
“We’re getting better and better every week,” McGravie said. “This was our goal from Day 1. All roads lead through Laval.”
The winner of the title game will represent Quebec at the CIS Women’s Rugby Championship in Lethbridge, Alta, Oct. 30-Nov. 2.
