Wrestler Tremblay leads Concordia medal haul

Concordia University’s David Tremblay won a gold medal and was named the outstanding male competitor at the CIS wrestling championships in Calgary on Saturday.

Wrestling at 61 kilos, the first-year Leisure Science student won three preliminary matches and a gold medal match at the two-day competition. He outscored his opponents 39-3.

In the gold medal match, Tremblay outscored Simon Fraser’s Raj Virdi 6-1. Virdi was a gold medallist at 57 kg in 2006. In the preliminaries he also defeated Brock’s CJ Hudson, the 2008 champion at 61 kilos.

Tremblay’s efforts helped Concordia finish in third place overall with 56 points in the men’s competition. Brock finished in second place with 58 points. Simon Fraser won the competition with 70 points.

Also, making it to the medal podium were: Alex Dyas, gold medal at 90 kilos; Steve Rennalls, silver medal at 68 kilos, and David Zilberman, who won a bronze medal in the heavyweight category.

Rounding out the men’s competition were: Scott Schiller, fourth at 57 kilos; Michael Noonan, fourth at 82 kilos; Gabriel Choueke, fifth at 54 kilos; Gurveer Talhan, sixth at 65 kilos; Chris Kinsella, sixth at 72 kilos, and Serguei Guevorkian, seventh at 76 kilos.

With just two wrestlers competing on the women’s side, Concordia finished 10th out of 14 teams. Nikita Chicoine won a bronze medal at 67 kilos and Andrea Davidson finished seventh at 82 kilos.

The wrestling team is coached by Victor Zilberman who has run the Concordia program since 1977. He has guided his athletes to 52 gold medals and 106 medals overall. Concordia has also won six team titles at the CIS championships.

In addition eight athletes have been named the outstanding wrestler at the CIS tournament, and Zilberman has been named Coach of the Year on three occasions - in 2006, 1986 and in 1984.
