Chicoine, Buckley named Athletes of the Year

Wrestler Nikita Chicoine and point guard Damian Buckley were named the Concordia University Athletes of the Year at a gala awards ceremony attended by 400 people on Friday night in Montreal.

Nikita Chicoine has made quite an impact in her first couple of years at Concordia University. In 2008 she was the Stingers’ outstanding female rookie and she follows it up tonight by being named Female Athlete of the Year. This season she competed in six tournaments, winning the Queen’s Invitational, the Western Invitational and the Atlantic University Sport national qualifying event.

Chicoine went on to win a bronze medal in the 67 kilos weight class at the CIS nationals. She has collected many awards along the way. She was a two-time Stinger Athlete of the Week, she received a Quebec Fondation for Athletic Excellence scholarship and tonight she was presented the Radio-Canada Olympic bursary.

Now in his fourth season, Damian Buckley is the heart and soul of the Stingers men’s basketball team– offensively, defensively and on and off the court. A team captain, he helped lead Concordia to a Quebec conference crown and a berth at the CIS national championships.

A point guard with nerves of steel, he averaged 19.3 points a game that was tops on Stingers and third in Quebec. He also picked up 81 assists for an average of 5.8 a game, and with 56 steals, he was first on the Stingers and in the conference.

Buckley was the Concordia male athlete of the week four times. He was a unanimous selection as Quebec conference MVP and first team all-star. He was also a first team CIS all-Canadian.

Buckley hit a couple of personal milestones this season. He recorded his 1,000th career point in QSSF regular season play on Feb. 7, 2009 in a game versus the Laval Rouge et Or. It took him 56 games to reach the mark. In the last game of the 2009 regular season, at the nationals versus the Ottawa Gee-Gees, he scored his 2000th point in a Stinger uniform. It took 118 games to get the points.
