Stingers shine at cage tournament

The Concordia Stingers women’s basketball team put on a strong showing at its annual holiday tournament, winning two games before bowing out 74-59 to the No.1-ranked Simon Fraser Clan.

The victory in the championship game of the annual Concordia-Reebok tournament gave the top team in the country its 46th consecutive win.

Top scorers for the Clan were Robyn Buna, who was named tournament MVP, with 18 points, and Laurelle Weigl and Kate Hole with 17 points apiece.

Concordia’s Anne-Marie Prophete was the top scorer in the game with 23 points. She added 10 rebounds for the double-double.

The Stingers defeated the Queen’s Gaels 83-66 in the opening round. They downed the Manitoba Bisons 75-60 in the semifinals.

The McGill Martlets finished third overall with a 61-46 win over Manitoba.

Concordia’s Prophete and Jill Verhesen were named to the tournament all-star team. McGill’s Nathifa Weekes, McMaster’s Taylor Smith and SFU’s Kristina Collins round out the elite squad.

The tournament featured eight teams and ran Dec. 29-31.

The Stingers return to Quebec conference action this Friday when they host the UQAM Citadins. Tipoff is 8 p.m.
