With 11 wrestlers competing, Concordia University will send one of its largest contingents ever to the CIS championships at University of Calgary on Friday and Saturday.
From the strong group, the coaching staff is counting on several medals. There are high hopes for David Tremblay (61 kg), a former junior national champion who joined the Stingers in January 2009. He won a gold medal at nationals last March and was named the outstanding CIS male wrestler.
There are more strong medal contenders on the Concordia men’s roster. Matthew Miller (82 kg) won a gold medal in 2007 and a silver medal in 2006 in the 68-kilo weight class as a member of the McMaster University wrestling team. Scott Schiller (61 kg) and Michael Noonan (76 kg) both finished fourth at the 2009 CIS nationals.
The Concordia men’s team finished in third place with 56 points at the last championship. The Stingers head into the 2010 competition as the sixth-ranked team in CIS.
On the women’s side, Nikita Chicoine (63 kg) hopes to improve on her 2009 bronze medal performance. She also has a silver medal to her credit from the 2008 championship. She was named the outstanding women’s rookie at the 2008 competition.
Also representing Concordia in the women’s competition is Andrea Davidson (82 kg), a strong, all-round athlete who also suits up for the Stingers soccer team. She placed seventh in 2009.
As well, two rookies will make their debut this week. Veronica Keefe (72 kg) and Elisabeth Williams (67 kg) have enjoyed impressive rookie campaigns.
Concordia enters the national championship as the No. 8-ranked women’s team in CIS.
