4 medals for wrestlers at nationals

Members of the Concordia Stingers wrestling team brought home four medals from the CIS national championship held at University of Calgary on the weekend.

On the men’s side, David Tremblay and Matthew Miller won gold medals in their weight classes, 57 and 82 kilos, respectively.

Tremblay, a second-year student from Stoney Point, Ont., won his weight class, earning his second consecutive gold medal at nationals. He was a gold medallist and named the outstanding wrestler at the CIS championship in 2009.

This year, he won all three preliminary matches without having a point scored on him. He defeated Gilbert Musonza of University of Regina in the gold medal match.

Miller, a transfer student from Jarvis, Ont., picked up the third medal of his CIS career. He defeated Alex Burk of Calgary in the final. Previously, he won a gold medal in 2007 and a silver medal in 2006 while studying at McMaster University.

Other results for the men’s team were: Scott Schiller, fourth, 61 kilos; Michael Noonan, fourth, 76 kilos; Serguei Guevorkian, seventh, 72 kilos; Ahmad Abo-Mathkoor, eighth, 90 kilos; and Marc Guibord, eighth, 65 kilos.

The Concordia men finished fifth overall with 34 points.

On the women’s side, rookie Elisabeth Williams won a silver medal at her first CIS championship. She went through the preliminary round undefeated before losing to Stacie Anaka of Simon Fraser University in the gold medal match of the 67 kg division.

Nikita Chicoine earned a bronze medal in the 63-kilo weight class. It was her third medal in three years.

Veronica Keefe and Andrea Davidson both finished in fifth place in their divisions, 72 and 82 kilos, respectively.

The women’s team finished in sixth place overall with 22 points.
