Rugby, wrestling shine at awards banquet

Rugby player Jackie Tittley and wrestlers Nikita Chicoine and David Tremblay were named the Concordia University Athletes of the Year at a gala awards ceremony attended by more than 450 people on April 9 in Montreal.

Tittley and Chicoine were co-winners of Sally Kemp Award, which is presented to the Concordia Female Athlete of the Year.

Jackie Tittley, an exceptional third-year athlete, was a big contributor to her team’s great success in 2010. She helped the Concordia women’s rugby team post a 13-1 win-loss record – the only loss coming in overtime in the gold medal game at the national championship. An inside centre, she’d been hospitalized earlier in the tournament, but still came back to help in the championship game.

“Jackie has a lot of confidence and she brings confidence out in others. She works very hard and works hard to bring out the best in her teammates. She has a great head for the game. She thinks everything out. She never panics, never gets flustered,” says head coach Graeme McGravie

Tittley was a dominant force in Concordia’s 2010 championship season. She was the leading scorer on the Stingers and in Quebec with 78 points in six games. She was a Quebec conference all-star, the Quebec MVP and for the third straight year – a CIS all-Canadian

She was also the Concordia Female Athlete of the Year in 2010.

Nikita Chicoine won her first gold medal in four appearances at the CIS national wrestling championships which were held at Lakehead University this past February. Competing in the 63 kilos weight class, she won all three of her preliminary matches and then defeated Larissa D’Alleva of the University of Western Ontario in the gold medal match. She was named a CIS first team all-Canadian.

Her efforts helped the Concordia women’s team finish in seventh place out of 13 competitors.

During the university season the Montrealer competed in five tournaments, winning the Concordia, McMaster and University of New Brunswick competitions. She also finished first at the Atlantic/Quebec qualifying event which earned her a berth at the national championship.

Chicoine was also the Concordia Female Athlete of the Year in 2009.

David Tremblay, a native of Stoney Point, Ont., won his third consecutive gold medal when the CIS wrestling championship was held at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ont. in February.

He defeated Lakehead’s Gaston Tardif in the gold medal match of the 57 kilo weight class. He won all three of his preliminary matches, outscoring his opponents 38-7.

Tremblay earned first team CIS all-Canadian honors for his efforts.

Tremblay’s gold medal helped Concordia secure the men’s championship at the national tournament. The Stingers finished first with 55 points.

Over the course of the year, he won all four tournaments he competed in as a member of the Stingers. He also represented Concordia and the CIS at the World University Wrestling Championships last Turin, Italy last October. He finished 10th overall.
