Claire Hortop invited to national rugby tryout

Concordia Stinger Claire Hortop is among 48 athletes invited to Rugby Canada’s senior assessment camp slated for June 3-5 at Shawnigan Lake, B.C.

The focus of the camp will be head-to-head games of both Sevens and Fifteens format where John Tait, head coach of the Canadian women’s senior program, can observe players in direct competition for national selection.

The camp is also an opportunity to select athletes to play for the national team in the 2011 Nations Cup tournament hosted by Canada at Appleby College in Toronto later this summer.

Hortop, a second row player from Mississauga, Ont., has been with the Stingers for four seasons and has served as team captain for the last three years. She is a four-time Quebec conference all-star.

“Claire has developed into one of the leading players in the Quebec league during her four years here,” says Stingers head coach Graeme McGravie. “Her line-out jumping has been dominant and her decision-making ability with the ball in general play has been outstanding. At a national level, she will be able to use these skills to her advantage.

“I have no doubts she will make a name for herself not only at the camp but in the months to follow.”

Hortop, who is five-foot-11, will be back for a fifth season with the Stingers this fall. She studies in the university’s prestigious Exercise Science program.
