A record number of Concordia Stingers student-athletes received bursaries totaling in excess of $26,000 at the 26th Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence du Québec (FAEQ) gala held in Montreal last week.

Five athletes received recruitment bursaries: Serghina Estimé, women’s basketball, $7000; Robert Brunsch, football, $3000; Linda Morais, wrestling, $3000; Jerome Blake, men’s basketball, $2500; and Gregory Rossy, wrestling, $2500.

Wrestler Nikita Chicoine received a $2000 bursary as the top female athlete in an individual sport, while David Tremblay, also from the wrestling team, was awarded $1750 as a finalist in the male athletic excellence (individual sport) category.

Three more Stingers received awards in recognition of their athletic excellence: Jackie Tittley, women’s rugby, $1500; Kyle Desmarais, men’s basketball, $1500; and Terrance Morsink, football, $1500.

In addition, rugby head coach Graeme McGravie was recognized as the outstanding women’s coach in Quebec university athletics. Wrestling mentor Victor Zilberman was one of three finalists for outstanding male coach.

McGravie’s program was also in the mix. The 2010 rugby team was a finalist in the women’s team of the year category. The Stingers were undefeated in the Quebec conference and went on to win a silver medal at the national championship.
