Women's soccer rolling through indoor season

The Concordia Stingers women’s soccer team is enjoying a strong showing in the Quebec conference indoor season that began in early January.

Four games into the six-game schedule, the Stingers have a 3-1 win-loss record and are sitting in second place in the seven-team league.

“We’re grinding out wins,” says head coach Jorge Sanchez. “We are playing solid tactical soccer. We take advantage of our opportunities when they come.”

The McGill Martlets are in first place with a 3-1-1 record, but Concordia trails them by just one point and has a game at hand. The Stingers also own the tie-breaker with McGill thanks to a 1-0 victory on Feb. 5. It was the first time in five seasons of indoor play that Concordia took a win from the Martlets.

A few Stingers are helping lead the team, including captains Shannon Travers, a defender, and forward Jennifer Duff.

“Shannon has solidified the backline and Jennifer has kept the team moving forward,” Sanchez says, “but it’s been a solid team effort with different people stepping up each game.”

Defender Philippa Little has been shutting down opposing scorers, while rookie goaltender Saby Dagenais has allowed just three goals in four games.

Veteran forward Emily Hubbard has a couple of key goals this season, including the lone goal in the 1-0 victory over McGill.

After enjoying a break last weekend, the Stingers are ready for the last two games on the schedule. Concordia visits the Sherbrooke Vert & Or on Sunday at 3 p.m. and then travels to Trois-Rivières to meet the UQTR Patriotes on Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.

Indoor soccer playoffs begin March 11.
