Kaylah Barrett named Quebec women's basketball MVP

Kaylah Barrett, a second-year guard with the Concordia Stingers, was named MVP of the Quebec women’s basketball conference when the all-star and major award winners were announced this afternoon.

Barrett, a Brampton, Ont. native, is a leader in several of the RSEQ’s statistical categories. With an average of 15.5 points a game, she is second in scoring. She is third in rebounding with an average of 6.5 a game and she leads the conference in steals with 2.1 a game.

Along with MVP honours, Barrett was named to the first all-star team. In 2011, she was also a first team all-star, the outstanding defensive player in the conference and the rookie of the year.

It’s the first time since 2004 that a member of the Stingers was named the outstanding player in the conference. Maria-Jose Raposo was the previous MVP. She was also a second team all-Canadian in 2003-04.

Magalie Beaulieu, a fourth-year guard from St. Laurent, Que., was named to the second all-star team. She was second in team scoring with an average of 8.4 points a game.

Natasha Raposo, a guard from Montreal, was named to the conference all-rookie team. She averaged 6.1 points and 15 minutes of playing time a game. She comes to Concordia from the Vanier Cheetahs.

You can see Barrett, Beaulieu, Rasposo and the rest of the Stingers in action tomorrow night when Concordia hosts the Bishop’s Gaiters in semifinal action. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
