Barrett's effort can't save Stingers in cage final

Kaylah Barrett poured in a game-high 23 points but it wasn’t enough to lead the Concordia Stingers to victory in the RSEQ championship game on Friday night at McGill University.

The McGill Martlets held on for a 56-49 victory and their first Quebec title since 1996.

Barrett, a second-year guard who was named the conference’s MVP earlier in the week, had seven rebounds to go along with her 23 points. She was exceptionally strong at the free throw line going 10 for 14.

Helping out was rookie guard Natasha Raposo who came off the Concordia bench and picked up 13 points and three rebounds in 17 minutes of play.

The top player for the Martlets was Anneth Him-Lazarenko with a double-double – 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The Stingers fell behind early in the game that saw McGill in front 30-16 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter the score was 48-29 and the Martlets had their largest lead of the game.

Concordia fought hard in the final frame, outscoring McGill 20-8. It just wasn’t enough to erase the big lead.

Despite the loss, Concordia still has a chance to get to the CIS national championship in Calgary March 17-19. The Stingers have earned a berth in a four-team regional playdown at the University of Saskatchewan March 9-10. The winner of tournament advances to the nationals.
