The members of the Concordia women’s soccer team will play in honour of an inspirational former Stinger this Friday at 8:30 p.m. when they host the McGill Martlets in the seventh annual Erica Cadieux memorial game at Concordia Stadium.
The game pays tribute to Cadieux, a young mother and lawyer who died tragically at 34 years of age when she was struck by a car in January of 2006.
Cadieux was a mid-fielder/defender with the Stingers women's soccer team 1992-94. Rhonda Baptiste, a former teammate describes Cadieux as "an exceptional human being who was filled with Stinger pride."
Concordia head coach Jorge Sanchez remembers Cadieux’s positive attitude. “She was someone who was always seen as the epitome of a student athlete because she cared about her teammates,” he said.
Afterwards members of Cadieux's family will present the plaque that bears her name to the captains of the winning team. Erica's widower, Carlo Spadafora, and her children, Bianca, 8, and Olivia, 7, will make a special trip to Montreal from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., where they now live.
There is no charge to attend the game. However, donations of cash and teddy bears for the Montreal Children's Hospital would be appreciated.
The Stingers hope to get their name on the plaque for the first time this Friday. They had a tight battle with the UQTR Patriotes before succumbing 3-2 last year. The previous five games were won by McGill.
